Thanks for the heads-up, Mark! Amazon says the book will be out in about a week. I'm particularly interested in details on how Rumsfeld and Cheney turned from traditional Republican realpolitik foreign policy to becoming 'preventive warriors'.

How different history would be if Rumsfeld had decided to wile away his days running a country newspaper with a rumpled, gay New York leftist!

A TV sitcom that practically writes itself...

FYI, though I know where you got the gay innuendo, Al has three children and a widow who would disagree with your characterization. The "rumpled" description is more indisputable.

Honestly, Chafe harps on that issue way too much in what is otherwise a very interesting biography. He comes up with a lot of nothing, but why anyone would care is totally beyond me.

I just went back and re-read William Buckley's speech at Lowenstein's funeral. It's absolutely gorgeous.

This blog is absolutely great. Keep it up.

"wile away his days".... Interesting typo.

According to Webster (http://www.m-w.com/cgi-bin/dictionary?book=Dictionary&va=wile&x=0&y=0)

wile n. skill in outwitting

But, as Jim said -- great blog. I'm adding it to my "TypePaddy" typelist.
